There are three different types of clients which are deployed in Web NMS. They are the Application client, the Browser client, and the Java Web Start client. A brief overview of each of the three clients are as follows.
The Application client is a non web based interface which can be accessed as a standalone application. A standalone client must have all the client related files installed in the local machine. Due to this standalone functional nature, the accessibility speed of the client is enhanced thereby making user interaction easy. The Application client can be started by accessing the startApplicationClient.bat file located in <Web NMS Home>/bin directory and launched as a standalone applet. It can also be launched through the Web NMS Launcher tool by accessing the WebNMSLauncher.bat/sh file located in <Web NMS Home> directory.
The Java Applet client is one which can be invoked through a browser even when the Web NMS server is running in a different machine. The Java applet client downloads the client jar (from the machine in which the server is running) into the local machine, once connection is established. The applet client can be invoked by specifying the host name of the machine in which the Web NMS server is running and the port number of the machine at which the Web NMS server is listening.
The Web Client differs from the Applet Client in that it does not need the web browser to be Java-enabled. However, the user interface and development process for the Web Client is totally different.
The Java Web Start client is one which can be launched through a browser only if the Java Web Start application is installed in the local machine. The Java Web Start application facilitates downloading of the client side files into the local machine for access.
