Chunghwa Telecom's Management Software Challenge

Chunghwa Telecom provides high performance telephony,broadband, data communication, Internet, and wireless services to over 20 million subscribers in Taiwan and the offshore islands. Chunghwa Telecom relies fully on its network infrastructure for its day-to-day operations. Chunghwa Telecom’s infrastructure is an expansive heterogeneous transmission network composed of network elements and management applications from established vendors, such as Nortel Networks, Alcatel, and NEC among
others.

The infrastructure is managed by a diverse set of standard protocols such as SNMP, TL1, and CLI as well as proprietary protocols. Enabling interoperability and tight integration in such networks is a daunting challenge. Streamlining operations that involve interactions between multi-vendor multi-technology entities has been traditionally achieved by introducing protocol and function specific adapters. However, as the number and complexity of network elements increase, this model becomes prohibitively expensive and complex.

Chunghwa Telecom was looking for an integrated and highly scalable platform to enable management across various elements and management applications.

WebNMS Framework Offering

Chunghwa Telecom selected WebNMS Framework’s carrier class network management platform, WebNMS Framework, for its management software development project.

The engineers at Chunghwa Telecom rapidly developed the Quality Management System (QMSTM), a management solution that seamlessly integrates applications and Network Elements (NEs) such as Alcatel 1648 SM, Nortel networks S/DMS OC48 Transport Node, etc,. and effectively manages Chunghwa Telecom’s complex network infrastructure.

WebNMS Framework provided hooks for all the requirements of Chunghwa Telecom and facilitated rapid development of the application with its out-of-the-box FCPS functionalities, open standard northbound interfaces, scalable n-tier architecture, inventory management, provisioning, and intuitive GUI.
